‘The Shining’ Maze Necklace

How amazing is this brass necklace of the maze from The Shining?  My crazy-talented husband made it for me!  So excited (and proud) to finally be able to wear it.. :)

UPDATE: I’ve had a nice response to this necklace, thank you!  I may have to convince my husband to make a few more and put them on my site for sale..

HelloGiggles & Gallery 1988 Present: Young Adult

Recently I’ve had to turn down quite a few awesome theme shows, in order to focus on my 2-person show in May.  But I just couldn’t pass up the upcoming all-girl show, a collaboration between HelloGiggles (founded by Zooey Deschanel, Sophia Rossi, & Molly McAleer) & Gallery 1988 entitled Young Adult.  The show is geared towards a younger female crowd, with all pieces based on various book series, including The Baby-Sitters Club, Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High, and Goosebumps.

I spent my pre-teen summers reading literally all of these series, as far into them as my middle-school years would deem socially acceptable.  For my piece, I ultimately decided on Sweet Valley High, because at age 11, I had an older cousin who gave me over 30 of her old SVH books. Even though my mom told me they were too old for me, I read them anyways.. thinking I was reading a taboo, adult series of some kind.  Anyway, I loved them, and would constantly flip back to the covers as I read, checking out the hair styles and clothes they were wearing.

I wanted to do a piece that reinterpreted that famous, circular illustrated cover that usually portrayed Jessica & Elizabeth Wakefield in various dramatic poses.  It’s painted on a circular wood panel, with Flashe paint, and is sealed under a layer of resin.  The show opens in LA on February 2nd.

Hitman Trilogy Art Book

I was honored to contribute an original piece for the Special Edition Hitman Trilogy art book, out this month with the Hitman HD Collection release.  Each artist was asked to reinterpret a specific scene from one of the first 3 games, mine being Agent 47′s failed clones.  I thought it might be fun to have the original 47 play his less-than-smart clones at poker, since he would probably end up winning every single hand.  Prints of the piece are available here for a limited time.

Press Paws

I’m more than thrilled to be a part of Press Paws, a charity art show taking place on February 9th, at Gallery Nucleus.  All proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to the ALL volunteer animal rescue, Whats Up Dog LA.  Each artist was asked to pick their favorite animal from a video game & create a piece based on it.. I chose a Spiny from Super Mario Bros, who I always found to be both cute, and sort of annoying.  :)

More info on the great event, and a chance to donate HERE.

Bloomberg View + Updates

Things have been a little slow here on the blog, but then again, very busy in my studio!  I have two, sorta-secret projects in the works (more on that a little later), and I’m trying to take a few fun freelance jobs along the way.  This week I did a little piece for the Bloomberg View, on the historical vs. modern interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. Read it HERE.

In fun news, my husband and I bought the tiniest pickup truck of all time.  It’s ridiculous.  Anyway, I’ll have a bit more info after the holidays about the cool things happening in 2013.  Until then, have a very warm, safe, & Merry Christmas!

Sleep

Update: On super sale HERE

This piece was a nice change of pace for me, as I was able to get back into some of my old obsessions: repeating textures, patterns, and color!  Created for the Dreaming Child show at Chicago’s Gallery 27, artists were asked to create a piece based on their favorite fairy tale, children’s book, or bedtime story.

I decided on one of my all-time favorites, the well-known classic, Sleeping Beauty. It gave me a great excuse to work on something super girly (long hair, rosy cheeks, flowers– the works!), as it’s been a while. I also tried out a few new things with this piece; playing with the perspective, composition, and depth, along with adding a few different kinds of texture. It was a lot of fun painting this, and I was finally able to sit & listen to Stephen King’s The Stand (on audiobook) in its entirety!

30 Days of Saul Goodman

What can I say about the Breaking Bad Art Project, except that I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to participate!  Not only is Breaking Bad one of my favorite TV shows currently on TV, but I have been such a fan of the amazing art/posters being created as part of the BreakingGifs campaign.

When I started sketching out ideas for my piece, I kept coming back to my favorite character on the show: the hilarious, slightly corrupt, sleazy but charming, strip-mall layer, Saul Goodman.  What cracks me up about him most is his loud, mismatched, colorful wardrobe.

So I decided to go through each & every episode that Saul was in and document exactly what he was wearing.  Yes, it took forever, but it was great excuse to rewatch 4+ seasons of great TV!  They’re all individual 5in x 5in painted wood panels, each sealed in resin.  Below, in order left to right, I give you 30 Days of Saul Goodman:

Work in Progress

I’m really excited (and a little hesitant) to share a little side project I’ve been working on with my husband.  We’ve slooooowly been collaborating on a small line of jewelry.. No set deadline, but we’ve been working on it in between other projects.  Here’s a little peek at an almost-finished prototype– The Shining maze, brass-cut necklace plate!

NY Times Sunday Review : Are Americans Selfish?

This week I worked on a fun little illustration for the Times Sunday Review ‘Letters’ section about Americans & selfishness.  I actually worked on two pieces for them this week, but one of them got killed..  As is the world of freelance!

Martha Stewart Living – Braid Basics

I was recently asked to illustrate step-by-step instructions for 4 different types of braids in the August 2012 issue of Martha Stewart Living.  It was a fun change of pace for me, after weeks of sitting in my studio painting.

I have to say though, I was able to figure out how the braids were completed enough to draw each step, but I have yet to personally master a successful fishtail braid.  Hopefully her readers have better luck than I did!

MEMES

I’m really honored and excited to be participating in Gallery 1988′s 8th Anniversary show, Memes!  I had a hard time narrowing down my ideas for this one, so I decided to do bunch of little pieces, showcasing some of my favorite memes.
